Winemaking

Crafting Premium Okanagan Wines from Exceptional Kaleden Vineyards

Year after year, our Kaleden vineyards produce some of the best wine grapes in British Columbia, thanks to the region’s ideal climate, rich soil, and sustainable farming practices. At Lakeboat Vineyard & Winery, our philosophy is simple: Great wine starts in the vineyard.

Our focus is on minimal-intervention winemaking, allowing the true character of Kaleden’s terroir to shine through. We carefully tend to our vines, ensuring each grape reaches its peak expression, and harvest them at the perfect moment to preserve their natural complexity.

Once the fruit is in the winery, we let nature take its course, guiding the wines through fermentation and aging with as little intervention as possible. This approach allows us to create authentic, terroir-driven wines that reflect the distinctive flavours and structure of Kaleden’s unique wine region.

Whether you’re exploring boutique wineries in BC, searching for small-batch Okanagan wines, or simply looking for an exceptional expression of Kaleden’s terroir, Lakeboat Vineyard & Winery’s handcrafted wines deliver a true taste of the land.

Year after year, our vineyards produce the most spectacular fruit! “It’s our grapes that are making these wines – our aim is to care for the vines as carefully as possible and then harvest them when they are at the peak expression for each variety. We then let nature take its course, letting the wines develop with as little intervention as possible.” ~ Mireille Sauvé, Winemaker.

The goal is to produce a true expression of the Kaleden terroir and the divine fruit itself.

Kaleden is a Hidden Gem in BC Wine Country

Welcome to our small, beautiful village, located in British Columbia’s South Okanagan. A relaxed, rural lifestyle waits for you here on the western shore of Skaha Lake.

For over a century, Kaleden has been an agricultural centre with the first fruit trees planted in 1909 and the first vineyard in 1975. The name Kaleden combines the Greek “kalos” meaning “beautiful” and “Eden” after the Garden of Eden. The town received its name in a contest that was held to find a name for the newly established community on Dog Lake (Skaha Lake). The winner was Reverend Walter Russel of Toronto, who suggested Kaleden. First prize for the winner was a town lot!

Our Vineyards &Farming Practices

Premium BC Wine Grapes Grown in the Heart of the Okanagan

Kaleden’s agricultural land is ideal for growing premium vinifera wine grapes, with local vineyards dating back 50 years, including Ercego Gewurztraminer, a key component of our SS Wanderer white blend.

A Unique Terroir for Exceptional Okanagan Wines

Predominantly flat, the vineyards that we manage have ample exposure, warming early with the morning sun for excellent phenolic ripening and then cooling in the evening, which helps to preserve the Okanagan’s trademark fresh acidity. Our home block is renowned for a unique, flinty minerality which consistently shows up in our Pinot Gris.

Kaleden is fortunate to have a constant breeze, similar to the famed ‘Vent Mistral’ of Southern France, which lends a unique character to our bold, luscious Merlot. This steady movement of air generally serves to reduce pest and disease pressure, helping with our regenerative farming practices. We are blessed with nutrient-rich soil, which we tend to with cover crops and hand-weeding.

Sustainable Vineyards & Regenerative Agriculture

Our crew is fortunate to work in a beautiful and vibrant natural landscape and we strive to do our part in not only maintaining it, but helping it thrive.

We practice regenerative agriculture, which is a farming system that focuses on improving the health of the land’s ecosystem, including the soil, water, and plant life. It’s a component of sustainable agriculture, which is supported by environmental stewardship, economic profitability, and social responsibility.

Our agricultural practices include minimizing soil disturbance, maximizing crop soil benefit, hand weeding, and avoiding the use of herbicides & pesticides.

This thoughtful approach to farming helps make our vineyards more productive and profitable, while also protecting the climate, water resources, and biodiversity of the area. The best part? Farming this way makes the grapes taste better, and better grapes make better wine.
